Norvel Pelle hurts ankle in first day of training camp

The Philadelphia 76ers are already one big man down just the first day into their training camp experience for this season.

There’s going to be plenty of news surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers during the preseason and sadly the injuries will be part of that. General manager Elton Brand did a good job improving the center depth so much so that if an injury were to occur, the depth would be fine. It seems like Brand choice to do so may already be paying off as Norvel Pelle went down with an ankle injury, according to Keith Pompey of Philly.com.

Pelle’s injury must not be considered serious as the was plan is to re-evaluate him after the first day of training camp, per Kyle Neubeck of PhilyVoice. Luckily this is just training camp and there’s no rush to get him back out on the court.

Pelle’s on a two-way contract, so he doesn’t figure to be in them mix for regular rotation minutes entering this season. He’d probably play most of this season with the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers G-League affiliate.

Last season he played with the Blue Coats and dominated on the defensive end. He averaged 11.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.0 blockers per game. He was arguably one of the best defenders in the G-League and that earned him a two-way deal this offseason.

In the event he does miss a significant portion of time, the 76ers have more than enough depth at the center spot to compensate for his loss. Joel Embiid and Al Horford are All-Star caliber big man, Kyle O’Quinn is an underrated rotational center, Jonah Bolden is very versatile and they even have 7-foot-4 Christ Koumadje for training camp as he’s only on an Exhibit 10 deal. The depth of chart of Embiid, Horford, O’Quinn and Bolden alone should give Philly enough leeway to not rush Pelle back.

It should be noted that Pelle is the second of the Sixers rookies to have an ankle injury within the span of a month. Matisse Thybulle had a minor ankle injury in September of 2019, but it didn’t end up being anything significant.

It’s sad to see an injury on the first day of the Philadelphia 76ers training camp, but it doesn’t appear to be a serious one and it shouldn’t impact the Sixers depth chart in a major way.
