Flyers give Jason Kelce a Mummers hat, Mychal Kendricks owns NBC hockey analyst

On Wednesday night, Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks joined the broadcast of NBC on NHL, offering analysis of the Flyers 5-2 loss to the Penguins from inside the glass next to NBC analyst Pierre McGuire.

NBC threw down to Kendricks and McGuire multiple times during the first period, and the enthusiastic defender pretty much held his own, which is impressive considering it was just the second hockey game he’s ever attended.

Give credit to McGuire for setting Kendricks up to succeed, such as turning the Flyers-Penguins rivalry into a question about who is the Eagles most hated rival in the NFC East.

“Cowgirls… um, Cowboys. But you understand. Cowgirls for sure,” Kendricks joked.

While Kendricks’ unease inside the glass was somewhat apparent, he completely held his own during an interview with NBC’s studio crew during the first intermission, especially when it came to answering a question by NBC analyst and Patriots fan Michael Milbury.

“I’m a big Pats fan, so clearly I don’t like you very much,” Milbury joked.

Kendricks, without missing a beat, shot back, “That’s funny. I don’t think I like you, either.”

Milbury’s serious question was about Malcolm Butler, the Patriots starting cornerback and one-time Super Bowl hero who was benched during the Eagles Super Bowl win. Milbury wanted to know if Kendricks was surprised when Butler didn’t play, and if he had any idea why.

“Was I surprised? Yes. Do I have any idea? No. Nor do I care,” Kendricks responded. “Not really worried about that. If they didn’t want to play him, that’s on them.”

Kendricks wasn’t the only Eagles player at the Wells Fargo Center last night. Center Jason Kelce, beloved since delivering a passionate, explicative-filled speech during the Eagles Super Bowl parade last month, helped pump up the crowd following the first period.

Kelce was also presented with a Flyers-inspired Mummer’s Hat made by Bobby Coyle of the Avalon String Band, who also made the Mummer’s costume Kelce famously wore during the Eagles Super Bowl parade.

“If you love the Flyers, let me get a ‘hell yeah!’ ” Kelce shouted into the microphone before leading the crowd with a “Let’s Go Flyers” chant.
