Sixers' JJ Redick says he was 'tongue-tied' in video purportedly showing racial slur

LOS ANGELES — JJ Redick said he was “tongue-tied” in a video in which the 76ers shooting guard purportedly used a racial slur while wishing Chinese fans a happy new year.

Several current NBA players and former Sixers great Allen Iverson are shown acknowledging Chinese fans and wishing them a happy new year in a video. Redick appeared to slip up on his words and said what sounded like a racial slur in the video.

However, this would be totally out of character for the 33-year-old, known for speaking out against racial inequality and social injustice.

“Just saw a video that is being circulated of me wishing a happy new year to NBA fans in China.,” Redick tweeted Sunday. “Clearly I was tongue-tied, as the word I purportedly said is not in my vocabulary. I’m disappointed that anyone would think I would use that word. I love & respect our friends in China.”
